History: South Korea and North Korea were once one nation, called Korea. Kings ruled the region for thousands of years. Then, in 1910, Japan took control.
The Japanese were harsh rulers. At the end of World War II, in 1945, Japan was forced to give up Korea. American troops took over the south, and Russian troops stayed in the north. The two territories officially became separate countries in 1948.
Two years later, North Korea invaded South Korea. This began the Korean War. Although the fighting ended in a truce in 1953, the countries remain divided.
Today, South Korea is a bustling country. It has a thriving manufacturing industry. It’s the home of a popular musical style called K-Pop.
