Baking Brothers

Two young Texas bakers turn their passion into a sweet business

Brothers Nigel, 12, and Shane Mushambi, 14, have loved to bake since they were toddlers. After they won a baking competition three times in a row, they decided to take their passion further.

“On the third year, people tried to buy the cake out of the competition,” said Shane. “We thought, ‘Well, if people are willing to buy our cake, we should sell it.’” And so, in 2018, the business 2 Bros. in the Kitchen was born.

The bakery, located in Missouri City, Texas, sells cakes, cupcakes, and other sweet treats. Shane and Nigel complete their schoolwork early in the week. This frees up Thursdays and Fridays for baking. It’s a time commitment—one cake, they say, can take up to six hours! But it doesn’t feel like work for the creative duo.

“I like the math of [baking], like calculating the surface area of the cake,” says Nigel. “And eating the cake. It’s just all-around fun!”

For Shane and Nigel, giving back to their community is part of the joy. They give some of their earnings to different charities.

The brothers also released a book in June. It’s called Beyond the Kitchen: How to Cook Up Success With Life’s Mistakes. Everyone makes mistakes, Nigel and Shane say, but learning from mistakes is the true recipe for success.
