In 1912, the Titanic disappeared from the surface of the sea when it sank after hitting an iceberg. More than 1,500 people died. Now the wreck is disappearing for good. It’s being consumed by rust-eating microbes!
Much of the shipwreck contains a metal called iron. Microscopic organisms are eating the iron. The wreck is also being buried by sediment like sand and silt. Scientists think the Titanic will be gone by the end of the century.
